Surgical Resources
Facilities for Minor Surgery Maintained by DAR
The Division of Animal Resources (DAR) maintains an animal procedures room in WMRB M001 for use by the veterinary staff and researchers in the WMRB. To avoid conflicts in use, investigators should contact the DAR office (727-8395) to reserve the space.
The procedures room has a limited amount of casework and counter space, a drop-in combination tub and examination table, an examination light, and a telescopic fume extraction arm (snorkel). The space can be used for a number of procedures including minor surgery, euthanasia, necropsy and perfusions. Other than major necropsy instruments that can be rented from the DAR, instruments and other supplies are not provided and must be supplied by each user.
To prevent the exposure of valuable mice to other rodents and their pathogens, the room should not be used for procedures involving mice. Such procedures should be done in specific laboratories or in the laminar air flow cabinets in the mouse housing rooms.
Permanent storage for equipment or supplies is not provided. Users should remove all implements, devices and equipment promptly after use. The DAR husbandry staff will attend to minor custodial needs such as trash removal, the cleaning of floors, and maintaining an inventory of paper towels, gloves and masks, but all users are asked to clean-up after themselves.
