Ordering Animals from Approved Vendors



  1. Using Animal Order Form, specify your animal needs. We do require that all fields be completed as each piece of this information is necessary to process the order. Each "line item" on the order has it's own specifications and are considered separate animal orders for the purpose of the DAR system, placement and charges.
  2. Please note that you have the option of providing one Smartkey for the purchase of the animals and the same or a different Smartkey for the housing of the animals. This animal order is your authorization to charge your Smartkeys for the purchase cost of the animals, the associated fees when ordering and the perdiems associated with the housing of the animals from this delivery. DAR provides direct uploads into the Compass system to bill back for the purchases and services provided and billing documentation is provided after the upload. Please see Billing Policies Procedures for additional information.
  3. "Date Required" indicates the approximate date for the animal delivery. If you indicate "asap" or "next", the order will be set up for the first availability (usually the very next delivery week). If there is a specific date on which you need your animals to be delivered, please use the space provided to communicate this as well. Please make an additional note in "detailed specifications" if the animals absolutely must be delivered on that exact date so that we can confirm if this is possible or not.
  4. Approved Vendor names and their deadlines are listed on the form on the top right side.
    1. Monday - Jackson Laboratory and Harlan.
    2. Tuesday - Charles River Labs and Taconic
    3. Other delivery dates are arranged by the vendor. Notification of delivery date is made to DAR Customer Service prior to shipping.
  5. Delivery transportation by the Approved Vendors list is ground delivery unless otherwise indicated by the Customer Service staff. Deliveries arrive ONCE a week according to their scheduled delivery days. There are no exceptions and no "rush" deliveries.
  6. "Specialized Orders" are those orders which require more care or notification to the vendor such as timed pregnant and untimed pregnant rodents orders, animals who require surgery prior to shipment, and all strains of animals where the vendor has small colonies of these strains which would likely wait list the animal order and delay shipment.
  7. Catalog Stock numbers are required for the vendors; Jax Labs and Taconic Farms only. This field is not required Charles River or Harlan.
  8. "Specifications" means age range for mice, i.e. 6-8 weeks, and weight range in grams for rats i.e. 200-250grams. A range in age or weight is required by the vendor. Exact weight cannot be guaranteed by the vendor.
  9. "Detailed Specifications" is for special notes to the vendor indicating such requirements as surgery prior to shipment, etc. You can also use this space to provide clarification to DAR on any point of information.
  10. "Rodent Cost Center" is the type of housing you require. This box is to be checked or to indicate with by an "X."
  11. Please indicate in which building your animals will be housed and also write the room number in that building if you have this information available, or if you have a room preference.
  12. "Special Requirements" though indicated on the form, is for the benefit of the Housing Facility Manager and should be verbalized directly with the manager prior to arrival of animal shipment in order to make sure that they are aware and prepared for your research needs.

Due to inclement weather and holidays, animal order shipments could be temporarily suspended. Please give the Approved Vendors and Customer Service staff ample time to plan deliveries in advance and offer options if required. Please see Animal Ordering Schedules for planned adjustments.
