  • What do I have to do to get an access card to the animal facility?
  • Complete a Security Card Access Request (Principal Investigator must sign) and bring to the orientation for animal users.

  • When is the orientation for animal users held?
  • Every Tuesday at 1:30PM with the exception of University holiday and inclement weather.

  • Do I need to schedule myself for the orientation of personnel caring for or using laboratory research animals?
  • Scheduling is not required. Just show up, but we do require that you BE ON TIME.

  • Who do I speak with about a problem with my access card?

  • How do I schedule a BSL-2 orientation?
  • Please contact Charmaine Christie at 404.727.8991.

  • My child wants to see the animals. Can I bring him/her into the facility?
  • No. Children (less than 16 years of age) are prohibited from entering the facilities at all times.

    For reasons of security, public health and animal health, anyone (greater than the age of 16 years old) wishing to visit the animal facilities must request authorization and escort from the Division of Animal Resources office. If permission is granted, all visitors must be accompanied by their faculty sponsor or a member of the Animal Resources staff. Staff access to animal facilities is limited to those persons whose assigned duties require that they enter the facilities.

Animal Biocontainment Safety Manual



Steps Required for Access to Animal Biocontainment Facilities



  1. Must have a biosafety protocol approved by the Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHSO)

  2. Must have an approved IACUC protocol

  3. Personnel must be listed on both the biosafety and IACUC protocols.

  4. Steps 1 - 3 must be completed prior to Step 4.


  5. Attend DAR general biosafety training. Schedule by contacting the DAR secretary:

    • Please provide the following information:
    • a. Name
    • b. Lab Phone #
    • c. PI Name
    • d. IACUC Protocol #
    • e. Biosafety protocol
    • f. Name of the agent you will be working with
    • g. Name of the building you will be doing BSL work in

    Step 4 must be completed prior to Step 5.


  6. Contact the facility supervisor for the building in which your work will be conducted to arrange an on-site orientation to the biocontainment room. Contact information will be distributed at general orientation.


  7. All steps must be complete before biocontainment access is granted.
