Veterinary Consultation

Emory University

Scientists are required by university policy, federal law (9 CFR Ch. 1, 1-1-92 ed., 2.31(d)(iv)(B))), and Public Health Service policy (Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, National Academy Press, 1996, p. 10) to consult an Emory University attending veterinarian in the planning of studies on animals. Such consultation should be done prior to application for animal use to the IACUC. The intent is to ensure that humane and scientific requirements are met and that the use and care of the animals is consistent with current veterinary standards. In order to meet IACUC's application deadlines, vet consults must be received by the Division of Animal Resources at (or before) the close of business (5:00pm) on the last Wednesday of each month to be considered for the following month's IACUC review. Persons submitted after the last Wednesday are encourged to contact the IACUC and forewarn them the application may be submitted after the IACUC deadline.

For studies to be conducted at Emory University (except the Yerkes National Primate Research Center), fax or email a copy of the rough draft of your IACUC application to the Division of Animal Resouces. The header on the fax or email should state: "Attention: Veterinary Consult." Consults that are mailed or hand-delivered should be directed to Medical Secretary, Division of Animal Resources.  Fax: (404) 727-3212  email: vet_cons@dar.emory.edu.

Contact the Yerkes National Primate Research Center (404-727-7772) to arrange veterinary consults for studies to be done entirely or in part at that site.

For studies involving nonhuman primates, an enrichment and socialization consult must be done.  Send a separate draft of the application to the Environmental Enrichment Coordinator (Phone: 404-727-8809 Fax: 404-727-7845) for this review.

Atlanta Veteran's Administration Medical Center

VA investigators should fax or email a copy of the rough draft ACORP and appropriate appendices to the Division of Animal Resources.

The header on the fax or email should state: "Attention: VA Veterinary Consult".
Fax: 404-727-3212
email: vet_cons@dar.emory.edu

Documents Required for the Consultation

Material submitted for the veterinary consult should be limited to the IACUC application or VA ACORP and its appendices. There is a 1 megabyte limit on the size of documents that can surmount our firewall and be received via email attachement. NIH and other grant applications are not needed for the veterinary consultation and often are too large to allow for receipt.
