Veterinary Drugs
In compliance with state and federal law, drugs and narcotics to be used in research animals should be purchased or special ordered from the Emory University Hospital (EUH) Pharmacy. The purchase of pharmaceuticals from the EUH Pharmacy requires an interdepartmental requisition and Georgia State law (26-4-120.2) requires also that scientists using controlled drugs, and who are not medical practitioners (i.e., physicians, dentists, veterinarians), be registered with the Georgia Drug and Narcotics Division. Applications for registration can be obtained by contacting the Drug and Narcotics Division at 404-656-5100.
The DAR acts as a pharmacy only in the case of drugs specifically designated for use in animals and available only by and on the order of a veterinarian. The list of drugs labeled for use in animals, available by and on the order of a veterinarian, and available from the DAR Pharmacy is generally limited to the following:
- Acepromazine maleate tranquilizer
- Atipamezole reversal agent (Antisedan)
- Euthanasia-5 narcotic solution (DAR controlled substance)
- Medetomidine tranquilizer (Dormitor)
- Xylazine tranquilizer (Rompun)
- Yohimbine reversal agent (Yobine)
- Tiletamine-zolazepam anesthetic agent (Telazol) (DAR controlled substance)
Other agents specified for use in animals-only and necessary for research can be special ordered by our office upon approval of a DAR veterinarian. Drug orders from the DAR require:
- An account number for billing
- The approved IACUC protocol number under which the agent will be used.
