Injectable Meloxicam Shortage

what?

Injectable meloxicam (5mg/ml vial) is expected to be on manufacturer back order indefinitely due to production delays. Available stockpiles will expire on 08/31/2012. Future availability is unknown.

who is affected?

Labs that currently use injectable meloxicam will be unable to obtain new drug for the foreseeable future.

helpful advice

Oral meloxicam (0.5 mg/ml, 1.5mg/ml) is still available and in many cases, can be used in place of the injectable form. Please note when dosing your animal that the concentration of the oral formulation is different from the injectable form. For protocols that require an injectable analgesic, alternative drugs can be found on the DAR website at http://www.dar.emory.edu/VETCARE/analgesic_drugs.php or in discussion with a DAR veterinarian. Suitable nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug substitutions for postoperative analgesia in mice and rats include flunixin meglumine 2.5 mg/kg SC and ketoprofen 3-5 mg/kg SC. Please consult a DAR veterinarian at 404.727.3248 to discuss analgesia options and dosing requirements for your study.

IACUC protocol modification

Changes to the approved IACUC protocol will require a minor modification. The IACUC office is available to assist with protocol related questions at iacuc@emory.edu or 404.712.0734.
